The fire pictured here shows Ladder 68 raised for protection of a potential exposure during a 2-11 at 9950 Club Creek just after midnight. This blaze apparently started in a apartment's laundry building which shared a wall with an apartment building into which fire spread. Quick work by HFD kept it from spreading past the first apartments.

An HFD crew advances a 2 1/2 inch handline into a second floor window during a tough fight with a stubborn blaze that destroyed most of an 8-unit apartment building in far west Houston. The 2-11 fire came in around 10 PM at 160 Litchfield, a dead-end street off Memorial Drive. Neighbors said they thought a barbecue pit gas tank sparked the fire but the cause is under investigation.

Two additional engines had to be called to help quell a two-story townhome fire in Houston's upscale Tanglewood section. The 1:30 PM blaze gutted the second floor and attic of the home on Glynn Way near Briar Drive. Ladder 38 (shown, using reserve truck X-7) turned its pipe on for a few minutes after flames overtook much of the second floor despite an initial interior attack.

A Village FD Captain and Driver confer after the mode briefly switched to defensive during a house fire on Voss Road near Memorial Drive in the Houston suburb of Hunters Creek at about 3 AM. Six incorporated "villages" are completely surrounded by Houston on its west side and are protected by the single-station, career Village FD. VFD was assisted at this fully-involved house fire by 5 HFD engines and numerous support units.

HFD EMS and Rescue workers position a female patient on a gurney after extricating her from the driver's seat of a sedan pinned partially underneath a large box delivery truck. She reportedly had non-life-threatening injuries. The incident occurred about 2:00 PM at 7000 Grand Blvd. near the Texas Medical Center.

A pair of 2-alarm fires ripped through the attics of two apartment buildings in separate complexes only eight blocks apart and only a half-hour apart. The first fire was reported shortly after 7 AM at 12,707 Bellaire Blvd. and it damaged 12 units. With fire crews just making knock down on that fire, another blaze erupted at 4700 S Kirkwood, just 8 blocks east. That fire (pictured) took the roof off of 20 units. In the photo, Ladder 68 sets up to use its pipe on the Kirkwood fire.

A strong north wind spread a fire quickly through the second floor of a vacant building last used as a convenience store on Hillcroft just north of Main St. in far southwest Houston at about 7:15 PM. Two ladder pipes and several hand lines quickly knocked down the 2-alarm blaze. Arson units were called to investigate.

A windy day has whipped up a few structure fires in Houston. About 1 PM, a one-story house went up in flames in the 2700 block of Reynolds St. north of downtown. The blaze spread into a two-story home next door, but was quickly contained there, too. Two additional engines were summoned to help control the fire.

A single, narrow driveway into a complex of luxury, two-story townhomes on Houston's west side made access difficult for firefighters Saturday night, September 24. The building at the very end of the driveway was the one on fire limiting the number of apparatus that could be positioned close. The fire appeared to have started in the attached gararge of an end unit in the four-unit building at 2409 Bering Dr. near Westheimer. The blaze began about 10 PM and went to a 2-11 about a half-hour later. One large townhome was destroyed with smoke damage to two other units.

HFD firefighters move in to attack a stubborn apartment fire at 8155 Richmond and Ann Arbor. The fire was dispatched about 9:20 PM but additional alarms were required past 11 PM due to extensive fire spread and high heat. Three firefighters were taken to the hospital for overheating or injuries. The fire destroyed the entire building containing 28 units.

HFD District 8 Chief Jeff Crow confers with a captain while other firefighters attack a heavily-involved house fire from defensive positions. The blaze destroyed most of the back of the home, that was for sale, in the 2500 block of Barbee Street near downtown shortly after 3 AM.

A Houston FD engine company driver helps his crew stretch a charged "2 1/2" hose line to protect the "B side exposure during a 2-alarm house fire at 1334 Moorhead in northwest Houston. The blaze was reported about 4:30 AM on July 29 and on arrival firefighters found the homeowner and his wife in the front yard nearly overcome by smoke. The man said he was barely able to get his wife and her electric wheel chair out of the home before flames engulfed it. The proximity of exposures, volume of fire, a dead hydrant, and presence of victims all prompted the second alarm.

An HFD engine crew gets water into the attic of a burning two-story building in the Montrose area. The one-alarm fire required two additional engines to bring under control about 6:15 AM. The building, at 1706 Westheimer, formerly housed an art gallery and was next door to a coffee house, now rebuilt, that was gutted in an arson fire last fall.

A Houston firefighter prepares to raise a ground ladder as fire spreads quickly in wood-shingled, mansard-style siding voids at an apartment complex at 7000 Fonvilla and Fondren on July 4 at 6 AM. District 68 Chief Curtis Seamans pulled a second alarm as a precaution for the fast-spreading fire, but fast work kept the blaze contained basically to the area shown in the photo, and the 2-11 units were quickly released.

An HFD engine crew prepares to attack the flames after climbing a ground ladder to a third floor patio of a burning apartment building on Almeda near OST June 6 about 4:30 PM. The 2-11 fire damaged about eight units at the complex, and residents said the fire, mostly confined to the attic, could have been started by lightning. There were no injuries reported.

A Houston fire captain surveys the scene of a fully engulfed garage attached to a heavily involved ranch-style home in southwest Houston. The 1-11 (working one-alarm) blaze consumed the structure at North Braeswood and Academy about 12:45 PM on June 4 while outside temperatures hovered around 95 degrees. Three exposed garages and their associated homes were successfully protected by firefighters.

Houston firefighters are shown in defensive mode battling a stubborn blaze that destroyed a two-story home in the 2400 block of Rosedale near Dowling on May 11. Residents reported the fire started shortly before 11 PM in their kitchen, but two girls living there barely escaped. A 9-year-old jumped from a second-floor window and broke her ankle, while a 13-year-old had to be rescued by a relative from a second-floor window using a home ladder.

Northwest Houston firefighters arrived at 6101 Antoine about 11 PM to find flames coming from two adjoining apartment buildings. A 2-11 was quickly struck, and the fire was contained to approximately ten units in the two buildings.

HFD EMS crews assemble equipment for an EMS staging area near a burning three-story retirement center. The fire escalated to 3-alarms and was reported shortly before 4 pm at the Tremont Home at 2501 Westerland Drive & Westheimer. The flames appeared confined mainly to an attic space, but the third floor was filled with smoke. Amazingly, though, all estimated 90 residents were soon accounted for outside, many assisted by firefighters, and few requesting any onsite evaluation by EMS. A Houston firefighter, however, was taken to a hospital for evaluation after complaining of chest pains.

The Houston Fire Department held its annual memorial service to recognize the 63 city firefighters killed in the line of duty since the career department was established in 1895. The event was held at the firefighters pension office's memorial plaza in north Houston at 10 AM on March 19, 2011. More than 200 people attended.

HFD called out 3 alarms and nearly 100 firefighters to battle a blaze that began reportedly as a kitchen fire and spread to a common attic under a "rain roof," a pitched roof retrofitted on an apartment building built orginally with a flat roof. About eight units at the complex at 8990 Richmond & Fondren in southwest Houston sustained major damage as a result of the 6:30 PM blaze.

An early-morning blaze sent one resident to a Galveston burn center with serious injuries and displaced more than 50 families of the Emerald Shores complex at 3802 NASA Road 1 in the village of Seabrook, a coastal suburb of Houston, just blocks from the famous space center. Although HFD did not get called, ten area volunteer fire departments assisted Seabrook whose aerial is shown being moved into position to cut off flames spreading through a third building and threatening a fourth. Three aerial streams and numerous handlines were deployed to contain the fast-spreading 5 AM fire which destroyed roughly half the complex.

An apartment fire at 8500 Broadway near Hobby Airport in southeast Houston went to 3-alarms in the early morning. The blaze started in the middle of a long, two-story building and spread rapidly in each direction. A pre-teen boy was found dead at that fire after his father and brother were transported to the hospital with injuries.

Residents of this 6,000 sq. ft. house at 821 Bunker Hill Rd. in west Houston safely escaped a fire at about 5 AM. HFD firefighters are shown regrouping after switiching to a defensive mode after a brief interior attack. Narrow driveways and a brick fence around the home limited access for apparatus responding to the 2-11 blaze.

A three-alarm-equivalent fire spread through 16 units of an occupied apartment complex at 719 Sheldon Road in Channelview, a suburb just east of Houston. The Channelview VFD called for assistance from ten neighboring departments including Baytown, Pasadena, and Houston, the latter sending a full first-alarm assignment of 4 engines and 2 ladders. More than half of the building was destroyed or damaged. Firefighters in this photo can be seen operating outside a doorway as two air conditioning units on the roof near collapse.

Heights - January 3, 2011

A spectacular blaze greeted Houston firefighters about 4 AM in the 1100 block of Heights Blvd., just northwest of downtown. The large, two-story home, valued at $2 million and built four years ago to replicate the century old Victorian homes that used to line the historic street, was fully engulfed along with a two-story guest house behind it and a single story garage apartment on an adjacent lot. Several other homes nearby were critically exposed to intense heat and embers rained down on the neighborhood west of the house. HFD called in 3 alarms and, despite low water pressure, the companies were able to contain the fire to the buildings initially involved. An elderly female resident of the home was unaccounted for at tap out.

The crews of HFD Engine 76 and Rescue 10 man a hose line to protect the "D" side exposure at a 3-11 fire on Jan. 1, 2011. The wind-whipped blaze, dispatched just after 9 PM, destroyed approximately 24 occupied units in a single, two-story apartment building at 7502 Corporate Drive on the southwest side. Similar buildings surrounding the fire were protected successfully by firefighters. All residents of the building escaped the fast-spreading flames.
